has pushed the illumination power of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to 131 lumens per watt.
The LED developer and manufacturer said it set a new benchmark for white LEDs in latest tests confirmed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The tests involved the Cree EZBright model LEDs.
"This is the highest level of efficacy that has been publicly reported for a white LED and raises the bar for the LED industry," said Scott Schwab, Cree's general manager for LED chips. "This result once again demonstrates Cree's leadership in LED technology and provides a glimpse into the future as to why we believe LED-based lighting products could not only save energy, but also change the way people use light."
Lumens refers to the conversion of electrical energy to light. In comparison to LEDs, typical light bulbs deliver 10 to 20 lumens per watt, and fluorescent lamps deliver between 50-60 lumens per watt, Cree said.
