Meyer replaces Susan Seymour, the founding director of the BioNetwork, who retired recently. Meyer will assume his new post on Nov. 1.
The BioNetwork initiative is the Community College System's program to provide education and training for the state's growing biotechnology work force.
Meyer is no stranger to North Carolina, having worked as dean of business and industry at AB Tech in Asheville. He has a master's degree in bioengineering. He is a graduate of Clemson University.
"I can honestly say that the biotechnology initiatives in North Carolina are looked upon with great envy by others from outside the state," Meyer said in a statement. "But BioNetwork community colleges will need to continue to produce skilled workers to support biotech and life sciences companies in the face of this competition."
