DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman was shot several times as she waited for a bus on Meriwether Drive Tuesday evening.

Officers were dispatched at 5:27 p.m. to a shooting call in the 4000 block of Meriwether Drive. When they arrived, they found 20-year-old Monica Pettiford of Sudbury Street, who had been shot several times in the torso, back and head.

Officers were told that Pettiford and another woman exchanged words at the bus stop and that the other woman pulled out a gun and fired several shots.

A short time later, officers arrested 21-year-old Brenda Lee Whitaker of 514 Grammercy Place at her home.

Pettiford and Whitaker are acquaintances. The motive for the shooting was unknown Tuesday night.

Pettiford is being treated at Duek Medical Center. Her condition is not known.
