In court papers filed just before jury selection, Campbell acknowledged his responsibility for the death of his fiancee, Heather Domenie. However, Campbell claims he is not guilty of first-degree murder, which can carry the death penalty.
Until two weeks ago, Campbell maintained he was innocent, beginning with his call to 911 on July 25, 2002. According to his 911 call, he alleged Domenie, a Wake County teacher, choked herself with a tea towel she was wearing.
The prosecution will focus on the autopsy report, premeditation and a life insurance policy. Campbell's attorneys will challenge the medical examiner's findings and will try to convince the jury to convict him of second-degree murder.
Campbell's parents, who are from Nova Scotia, have been present throughout jury selection. Domenie's parents, also from Nova Scotia, are expected to attend next week.
