Canoeists OK After Capsizing In River

Posted Updated

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. — As authorities from three counties searched for them Friday, two people who were dumped in the Cape Fear River when their canoe capsized were able to rescue themselves.

The two men reportedly had been too exhausted to swim and kept floating with the canoe down the river. But they managed to get themselves out of the water before rescuers got to them.

Harnett County authorities received a call that the men needed help around 3 p.m. They then requested help from Lee and Chatham counties to locate the individuals.

The canoe was found about four miles south of Buckhorn Dam shortly before 5. The men were found a short time later.
