Girl sues former basketball coach who pleaded guilty to sex crimes

Mardy Lee Cutchin was named in a lawsuit Friday by a girl who says Cutchin had sex with her on three occasions and told her not to tell anyone about it.

Cutchin, of 1104 Squire Ridge Drive in Fuquay-Varina, was a girls basketball coach and P.E. teacher at Fuquay-Varina High School at the time in 2009. The girl was a student.

He was arrested in March 2010, after, prosecutors say, he sent the girl thousands of text messages.

He pleaded guilty in February to two counts of sexual battery but never served any jail time. He had to register as a sex offender, pay a $200 fine and serve five years on probation.

The lawsuit says the former student "was embarrassed and humiliated" by Cutchin's sexual advances and suffered "severe, permanent and disabling damage and injury to her psychological condition," including severe depression and emotional distress.
