Hoke County Authorities: Woman Confessed To Fatally Shooting Husband

Posted Updated

ROCKFISH, N.C. — The Hoke County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Saturday shooting that left a Rockfish man dead.

Alton "Reese" Mozingo, 46, was shot to death at the home he shared with his wife and stepson. According to Sheriff Hubert Peterkin, a domestic disturbance led to the shooting.

When deputies arrived, according to the crime report, they found Mozingo dead and lying face up inside the home, shot once in the upper torso.

Peterkin said the wife confessed to the shooting, but she has not been charged. The sheriff's office will do an investigation and turn over its report to the District Attorney, who will decide if the wife will be charged.

According to investigators, Mozingo's wife never filed abuse complaints against Mozingo. But they said that interviews with family members, relatives and neighbors show there was a pattern of abuse.

"Because of extenuating circumstances," said Peterkin, "coupled by a history of unremitting domestic violence within the home," the investigation continues.

Mozingo's body has been sent to Chapel Hill for an autopsy. The Hoke County District Attorney is aware of the circumstances and investigation.
