DURHAM, N.C. — Three Duke University students who were accused of assaulting an N.C. Central student outside a Duke dorm have been acquitted.
District Court Judge Ann McKown ruled the plaintiff could not prove the charges "beyond a reasonable doubt." As a result, 23-year-old Joshua Jean-Baptiste, 21-year-old John Njoku and 23-year-old Michael Curtis Mitchell were found not guilty of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.
Jean-Baptiste is the former student government president. Mitchell was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference wrestler.
The three students, who will graduate Sunday, were accused of assaulting Shawn Crumpton, who left the courtroom without comment immediately after McKown's ruling.
