Posted Updated

GARNER, N.C. — Robert Benjamin Sanders, 19, of Garner was arrested and charged with multiple crimes after an officer tried to pull his vehicle over early Friday.

According to Garner police, officer Bill Beamish responded to a 911 call of "shots fired" near Springview Trail at approximately 4 a.m.

While driving to the scene, Beamish observed a vehicle leaving the scene without its headlights on. The officer said he tried to stop the vehicle, believing the driver may have been involved in the incident, but the driver would not stop.

A pursuit followed and ended in the 100 Block of New Rand Road, near the driver's residence. Police said the driver -- identified as Sanders -- attempted to escape on foot but was caught by other Garner Police Department officers.

Sanders was charged felony speeding to avoid arrest, damage to real property, DWI, resisting arrest and driving with a revoked license, among others. His vehicle was seized pursuant to a current license suspension for DWI.
