I-40 Traffic Plan During Construction Draws Mixed Reviews

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Merging from a ramp on Interstate 40 in Durham County can be a challenge without a construction project. Now, many drivers have to come to a complete stop before getting on the highway.

As crews work on the eastbound lanes of I-40 near Highway 54, merge lanes in that area onto I-40 now have stop signs. Motorists are also forced to use the existing right lane and the outside shoulder.

Crews have covered the rumble strips with asphalt, but motorists say they still face a bumpy ride.

"Tell the DOT to do a better job here. Then, we would not have to be going through this," said another motorist.

The new traffic pattern will be in place for about two months.
