Each year, more than 600 sixth-graders attend the day camp to learn about the world and environment around them.
"We have a lot of kids for whom this is a life-changing experience. They are deciding now what they want to do in the future, and how they want to help keep the land safe for their kids," conversation specialist Brenda Williams said.
"They are experimenting. They are working with other teachers and they are learning quite a bit," teacher Roslyn Moffitt Palmer said. "They are taking their science education and are able to use it out here in the wilds."
The day camp is a joint program of the county school system and local soil and water experts.
