Student Killed, Two Injured In Highway 41 Accident

Posted April 17, 2003

— A freshman at Lumberton Senior High School was killed Wednesday afternoon while getting off a school bus along Highway 41 north of Lumberton.

The state Highway Patrol said a Ford Explorer hit the back right corner of the school bus as it was unloading students around 3:30 p.m. The Explorer then went along the shoulder of the road, striking two students before flipping several times in a field.

Priscilla Norton, 15, was killed. Anthony Gerald, Jr., 15, was injured.

Gerald was treated at Southeastern Regional Medical Center and released.

The driver of the Explorer, Nellie Rose, 66, of Bladenboro, was also transported. Her condition is not known. She was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Rose told Highway Patrol troopers that her brakes failed. Its reconstruction team has been requested to check the vehicle to determine if brakes were operating properly at time of accident.

Counselors, chaplains and ministers are available to students at the school Thursday.
