North Carolina law prohibits the placement of any signs other than regulatory signs within the highway right-of-way. North Carolina Department of Transportation workers will dispose of illegal signs.
They won't start taking the signs down until next week at the earliest.
"Keeping our roadsides free of clutter and trash is an important part of our commitment to provide citizens with a safe and well-maintained highway system," Tippett said. "Removing these signs and reminding advertisers of the law will also improve scenery for citizens and visitors traveling along our highways."
Potential advertisers are encouraged to review the laws regarding sign placement by contacting their local district engineer's office.
