The latest reassignment plan targets schools primarily in the southwest portion of Wake County and affects 35 schools. To catch up with growth, the Wake County school system built Holly Ridge Elementary and Holly Ridge Middle in Holly Springs. Those schools are set to open this fall.
Kevin O'Neal is one of many parents who have gone to public hearings on reassignment. He is part of a group called Assignment by Choice, which is made up of families that want more stability in their children's school careers.
"We feel like in many ways that the voices of parents are just being ignored," he said.
Kathryn Watson-Quigg, of the Wake County School Board, said shaping the makeup of schools helps to promote success in the classroom.
"Studies show that if you give total choice, the schools resegregate, and we believe diversity is important," she said.
School leaders say reassignment is an unpopular process, but with 3,000 students a year coming into the system, they say it is necessary.
