Four Suspects Sought In Death Of Rocky Mount Man

Authorities say Curt Jones was relaxing in bed when a stray bullet shot into his Rocky Mount bedroom. Police say four people were fighting across the street.

"An individual showed up and confronted another individual who was fleeing from them and he shot multiple rounds, and it just so happened that one round passed through the window and struck Mr. Jones in the head," said Rocky Mount Police Chief Bill Hogan.

Jones died Monday at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Jessie McNeil said the 47-year-old was one of his best friends -- a man with the gift of encouragement.

"He was a good friend to everybody," he said. "He believed in me so much that he had me believing in myself, so he had an inspirational effect on everybody. He touched a lot of lives."

Friends say Jones had been living in his home since 1999 when his other Rocky Mount apartment flooded during Hurricane Floyd. They say during the storm, he actually saved other people's lives by waking up the other tenants as the water rose.

Authorities are looking for four men, including 26-year-old

, who is not related to the victim, and 18-year-old

Warrants have been taken out on two of the four suspects. Police said they will be charged with first-degree murder.

Hogan said he believes the feud between the men was ongoing. The group was last seen leaving the scene in a 1998 Dodge Caravan with a North Carolina license tage PXN-1857.
