Chapel Hill Bans Panhandling After Dark

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — It is lights out for panhandlers in Chapel Hill.

The town council voted Wednesday to make it illegal to ask for money on public property after the sun goes down.

Business owners complained late-night beggers were scaring away customers.

The town's dusk-to-dawn ban applies to verbal or written direct requests for money.

The town already has an ordinance against aggressive panhandling.
