Durham Officer Injured In Police Chase

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Police in Durham and Apex and the Wake County Sheriff's Office are sorting out the details of a high-speed police chase Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators said Vadell Carpenter and his girlfriend were seen arguing inside a Cadillac on Alston Avenue. When police stopped Carpenter, his girlfriend screamed for help and he took off.

Durham police said Carpenter led them on a chase through the city. During the chase, an officer crashed into a ditch, trying to avoid an oncoming pickup truck.

The incident ended in Apex near the Haddon Hall subdivision on Highway 55 when authorities used stop sticks to disable the vehicle.

"There is always a lot of traffic on Highway 55 and that is the reason we deployed our stop sticks as quick as we could," said Capt. Steve Adams of the Apex Police Department.

The police officer was transported to Duke Medical Center after suffering head and neck injuries, but officials say he should be OK.

Six months ago, a

similar situation

took place when Roberto Campos took his ex-girlfriend Lourdes Guzman hostage and forced her at gunpoint to drive for six hours to Virginia. That incident led to Campos shooting Guzman and then himself. Authorities say that outcome did not have any outcome on how they handled this chase.

Carpenter now faces several charges, including kidnapping.
