— Raleigh police arrested a suspected shoplifter Thursday morning in connection with an assault on an employee at a discount store.

Syed Ali, the loss prevention manager at the Conway Store on New Bern Avenue, said he was cut in the face in the toy aisle during a confrontation with a man he believed was trying to steal a $29.95 coat.

The man then ran from the store, and Ali chased him for about a half-mile, he said. His injury wasn't serious, and he returned to work immediately following the incident.

Stanley Lawrence Dunn, 45, of 912 Weston St. in Raleigh, was charged with one count each of armed robbery, assault inflicting serious injury and carrying a concealed weapon.

The store's manager, Rosalina Rivera, said she sees about 40 to 50 cases of shoplifting a month during the holiday shopping rush. Last month, she said, there were about 25 cases.

This isn't the first time Ali has been hurt. He said he has been stabbed twice before and has even had a gun pulled on him.

"Yeah, I can see it now. Hot lead flying through a store full of shoppers. Why do you think they don't carry guns?
    fayncmike"

The reason I carry a gun is because I can't throw a rock 1250 feet per second.

Bob and Ambygirl, if you pull a knife on a RPD officer the perp will be the injury recipient.

"If he had been shot and killed im sure the store owners would have sent him flowers..

Kind of like the clerk that was shot and killed on Millbrook Rd. a few years back. The company didn't even pay to bury him. His relatives were taking donations.

Sounds like that security guy needs to arm himself and/or find another job.

Fighting crime ain't ever easy, too much going in the favor of the crooks. Sure glad he's still trying and that one more to put away, but unfortunately, his effort will be only the guy getting probation and order not to go into the store.

Whatever BOB, police officers are trained so they don't have 'this much body harm'. I don't believe Mr. Ali has that kind of training, at least not according to this story. But I have to agree with you, I would be looking for employment elsewhere or I would not be chasing shoplifters. I give him kudo's for his valiant effort though........
