RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Board of Transportation has awarded contracts totaling $18.4 million for highway projects in six counties across the state.
The contracts were for projects in Burke, Cabarrus, Guilford, Jackson, Montgomery and Rockingham counties.
Among the projects winning contracts were:
Widen 2.4 miles of Guilford College Road (S.R. 1546) from High Point Road (S.R. 4121) in Jamestown to north of MacKay Road (S.R. 1549) in Guilford County to a four-lane divided highway with a raised grass median.The contract went to English Construction Co. Inc. of Lynchburg, Va. for $10.9 million. Work will begin in late March or early April, with completion scheduled in December 2005.
Extend the Kannapolis Westside Bypass from N.C. 73 to Macedonia Church Road (S.R. 1620) in Cabarrus County.The contract went to Scurry Construction Inc. of Cornelius for $1.4 million. Work will begin in late March or early April, with completion scheduled in November.
Resurface and rebuild shoulders on 21.7 miles of state primary and secondary highways in Burke County. The contract includes work on U.S. 64, N.C. 126, N.C. 181, U.S. 70 and seven sections of secondary roads in the county.The contract went to APAC-Carolina Inc. of Asheville for $1.6 million. Work will begin in April, with completion scheduled in October.
Install median guardrails on 7.4 miles of U.S. 74 in Jackson County from east of the Swain County line to east of U.S. 441 North, and from Old Olivine Plant Road (S.R. 1514) in Dillsboro to Scots Creek Road (S.R. 1527) east of Sylva.The contract went to Elderlee Inc. of Oaks Corners, N.Y. for $692,560. Work will begin between March 31 and June 1, with completion scheduled 180 days thereafter.
Replace bridges over Norfolk Southern Corp. railroad tracks on Steve Road (S.R. 1378) in Price in Rockingham County.The contract went to Allegheny Construction Co. Inc. of Roanoke, Va. for $1.6 million. Work will begin in late March or early April, with completion scheduled in September 2004.
Replace bridges over Lake Tillery on Lilly Bridge Road (S.R. 1110) west of Mount Gilead in Montgomery County.The contract went to Dellinger Inc. of Monroe for $2.1 million. Work will begin in late March or early April, with completion scheduled in December 2004.
In other actions, the board passed resolutions naming:
U.S. 311 from Cedar Square Road (S.R. 1928) in Glenola to Banner Whitehead Road (S.R. 1931) in Randolph County for championship bull rider Jerome C. Davis, The bridge over Smith Creek on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway in Wilmington for the late Senator Luther Jordan of Wilmington, U.S. 421 from Minton Road (S.R. 1147) to Goforth Road (S.R. 1146) in Wilkes County for community leader and avid supporter of the four-laning of U.S. 421, the late William F. Absher, Jr.At the beginning of the meeting, Marvin Blount III of Greenville and Thomas A. Betts Jr. of Rocky Mount, who were recently appointed by Gov. Mike Easley, were sworn in to the board.
In addition, Mac Campbell, Jr., of Elizabethtown, G.R. Kindley of Rockingham, Marion Cowell of Charlotte, Frank Johnson of Statesville, Conrad Burrell of Sylva and Louis Sewell of Jacksonville, who were re-appointed by Easley, also were sworn in.
