Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County's new jail is now fully operational.

Over the last several weeks, prisoners have been transferred from the old jail under tight security. Authorities have finished moving in the last prisoners.

The facility currently holds 439 prisoners, and it can hold nearly 570 prisoners.

The old jail on top of the Sheriff's Office is now getting cleaned from top to bottom.

By July, the chief jailer hopes to start using the old facility for criminals sentenced to weekends behind bars.
