Off-Duty Fayetteville Officer Blamed In Fatal Wreck

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An off-duty Fayetteville police officer is accused of causing a deadly wreck Friday night.

The state Highway Patrol said the officer rear-ended a Suzuki Sidekick on Highway 87 in Cumberland County

A woman was killed in the wreck; her 8-year-old son was injured and is hospitalized. Another person in the car was not hurt.

The officer is identified as Carla Smith Woolard, 34, of Elizabethtown.

Preliminary tests show no drugs or alcohol were involved.

This collision is being reconstructed by the state Highway Patrol reconstruction team to determine if charges will be filed.

Smith remains on active duty.
