Two sought in Black Friday shooting at Fayetteville mall

Debbie Tanna, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said the first shots were fired outside Cross Creek mall, near the food court entrance, around 2 a.m. One man ran inside the mall, and a second ran after him, firing more shots near Macy's.

Detectives were reviewing surveillance video to identify the shooters and to try to find out more about what happened. Anyone with information about should call the sheriff's office at 910-323-1500.

No one was injured, but witnesses described the scene as chaotic as shoppers tried to leave the mall.

"People were running, and they were yelling," said Brock Blanks, who said he and his friends ducked for cover when they heard gunshots.

"Our first instinct was to hide, to get away from the situation," he said.

Some smaller stores closed in the wake of the shooting but have since reopened, Cross Creek Mall spokeswoman Tammy Hopkins said.

"From what we understand, obviously, it was an isolated incident, an unusual incident," she said. "It doesn't seem to have dampened the shopping spirit at the mall."

Still, Blanks said, it will be tough for him to forget what he saw.

"I mean, you see stuff like that happen in the movies, but you really don't expect it to happen," he said.
