ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. — A Camp Lejeune Marine was in jail in Onslow County on Monday, accused of attempting to carry an explosive device on a plane.
Police bag screeners stopped Pfc. Shadwick Simmons at Ellis Airport. They spotted a hand grenade firing pin inside his carry-on bag.
According to police, it was the third time a Marine has been caught trying to get a weapon on board a plane. FBI and law enforcement agents want to find out what Simmons' intentions were.
The 19-year-old Simmons is being held on $50,000 bond. He is charged with possession of an explosive device and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
As of 6:30 p.m. Monday, there was no word from Camp Lejeune on what disciplinary actions Simmons can expect there.
