One person was injured Monday morning following a collision between an Amtrak passenger train and a Crown Victoria in Garner.

The collision happened at 6 a.m. at Vandora Springs Road and Garner Road.

Garner police said the driver of the car trying to make a righthand turn on Garner Road to Vandora Springs, where the tracks are. Police said the crossing arm was already down when the driver drove around it, attempting to beat the train.

The train struck the car on the front end of the passenger side.

The driver, a 59-year-old man, was the only person in the car. He was transported to Raleigh Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police cleared the tracks, and the train, bound from Miami to New York City, left the scene at 7 a.m. The train was running behind prior to the crash.

Witnesses said all signals appeared to be in working order.
