Posted Updated

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Nearly two dozen college students were left homeless after a fire destroyed their apartment building early Saturday morning.

The blaze occurred just before 4 a.m. at Tar River Apartments in Pitt County. According to firefighters, no one was injured.

Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire Saturday afternoon. Witnesses on the scene said the flames spread very quickly.

Most of the students left homeless attended East Carolina University. Several of them were out of town for the holiday weekend.

The Red Cross said it already has spent more than $4,000 to help the students. They are asking anyone interested in making a donation to call the Pitt County Red Cross chapter.
