Fayetteville Strip Mall Shut Down For Hours After Pipe Bomb Found, Detonated
Posted — UpdatedThe bomb squad was called in to detonate the device in the parking lot of the Aldi Grocery Store on Ramsey Street.
A manager found the bomb just after noon Saturday. He called police after throwing the bomb away from the parking lot and into some bushes.
An investigator described the device as a 10-inch long tube the width of a cup, wrapped in tape with a protruding fuse.
Cumberland County's explosive ordinance division and a police dog examined the device, which officers rendered safe shortly after4 p.m. Gun powder in the device caught on fire briefly.
The entire strip mall was shut down for hours while police investigated. The mall was open again Saturday night.
As of Saturday night, police said they don't know who put the pipe bomb there or why.
Federal authorities were headed to the scene Saturday night to help local investigators.
