Raleigh Murder Rates Double In 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. — The capital city is set to close the books on a violent year.

In 2002, Raleigh reported 21 murders, up from 11 murders in 2001.Of those murders, 16 involved a shooting and 15 cases involved victims under the age of 30.

Although Raleigh's murder rate rose, see how the numbers compares to other cities in the state:

  • Durham: 31
  • Charlotte: 66
  • Fayetteville: 19
  • Charlotte: 66
  • Richmond, Va: 90
  • Raleigh police said that for a city its size, the murder rate here is actually pretty low.
