Gas-Log Dealers Seeing Red-Hot Sales

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — If you had a gas-log fireplace during the ice storm, you were one of the lucky ones.

Even though the ice has long since melted, the gas-log dealers are seeing some "red-hot" sales.

Mark and Stacy Christian decided they were not going through the cold again.

"During the ice storm, like a lot of people, we were cold, so we said: 'We're getting gas logs,'" Mark said.

Gas log dealers said they have seen a flood of customers who want to be better prepared.

"It's been extremely busy," salesman John Gunter said. "We haven't had time to sit down or even take lunches for the most part."

These days, gas logs are much more realistic looking and energy-efficient.

"The vent-free logs are 99.9 percent efficient, which means you are going to get practically 100 percent of the input in BTUs out in heat," Gunter said.

Some of the logs can be installed almost anywhere in a home, even without a chimney. Most dealers said they have a backlog of orders, coupled with a two-week wait to have the gas logs installed.
