The animal broke out of its pen in May and recently nearby residents expressed concern when the bull displayed aggressive behavior. Wake County Animal Control officials forced the owner to try to capture the runaway, but things did not go as planned.
Veterinarian Robbie Haskins said she tried everything to catch her bull calf that escaped eight months ago, but the animal's fear and marshy terrain foiled all of her efforts. The bull calf would be seen by nearby homeowners, who were concerned about the safety of the children in the area.
On Friday, Bobby Champion of Clayton came with his cow dogs. The dogs chased the bull calf into a deep pond. After struggling for 10 minutes, the bull lost the energy to fight and drowned.
Homeowner John Argentati jumped into the pond to get the lifeless bull calf. He said he does not blame Haskins or those who came to help.
"I think they did the best they could. You can't let a bull run around in a residential area," he said.
"I just hope they're happy. You know we almost had two people drown over there and that animal's dead and I hope they're happy," Haskins said.
