A spokesman for the police department identified the dead man as 51-year-old Everette Smith.

The other man, identified as Anthony Thacker, reportedly was at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, paralyzed from the waist down.

According to a report, Smith and Thacker were arguing outside a house on Fayetteville Street around 10:20 p.m. when they started shooting at each other. A police spokesman said at least four shots were fired.
