Cary Man, Mother Detained For Allegedly Conspiring To Commit Hate Crimes

Posted December 12, 2002

— Federal and state investigators are gathering evidence against a Triangle man who may have been in the area trying to recruit members into a hate group.

Christian Orhanovic and his mother are being detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. The situation surprises some residents like Guy Proctor living in the quiet Cary neighborhood.

"We haven't had any problems out here that I know of. Of course, something could happen in another building and we'd never know it," he said.

Neighbor Scott Truax said he watched as federal agents went into Orhanovic's building.

"My wife and I were looking out the window and saw five federal agents putting their sweatshirts on," he said. "You never know. You just don't know."

According to INS and FBI officials, Orhanovic is allegedly involved with white power organizations -- the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nation and possibly white power music. The FBI is looking into his involvement with Aryan Nation activities and the possibility he conspired to commit hate crimes.

Orhanovic has been arrested several times and was charged in September in Chapel Hill with pointing a gun at a pedestrian and assault.

"They seemed to be pretty nice people to me. He waved at me every time he came out, and she speaks every morning, goes to work everyday," neighbor John Clark said.

Federal agents are now going through the paraphernalia, pictures and books found in Orhanovic's condominum to build a case against the 26-year-old. Orhanovic's mother, who has not been identified by the INS, could face deportation to Chile. Christian is suspected by the INS of entering the U.S. illegally.
