COLUMBIA, S.C. — University of North Carolina football player Carl Smalls was shot and killed outside a Columbia nightclub on Saturday morning.

According to Richland County authorities, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. at "Club Voodoo."

Smalls, a Charleston, S.C., native, apparently was attending a private party with other football players from the surrounding area.

Officials said he was shot in the back and died at the scene.

Investigators said they had little to go on Saturday afternoon and no suspects.

The 6-0, 285-pound Smalls was a defensive tackle for the Tar Heels. A sophomore, he just completed his first season of playing for UNC after transferring from South Carolina and sitting out the 2001 season.
