Holiday Shoppers Look For Perfect Christmas Tree

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Not everyone is planning to spend their holiday weekend in the malls. Some people plan to enjoy the outdoors while picking out their Christmas trees.

Curtis Hare opened for business Thanksgiving Day. He has been selling trees in Raleigh for 15 years. Hare said he has built up a loyal customer base, despite shifting locations six times because of development.

Hare has 600 trees on the lot. The average price is around $60 apiece.

"I think the cold weather, Thanksgiving being so late this year, there's a shortage of trees, so people are really buying them up quick," he said.

There are a number of things to remember when caring for your Christmas tree:

  • Be sure to keep the water level around the base of the tree.
  • A good rule of thumb is one quart of water for every inch of diameter of the trunk.
  • Experts also suggest adding preservatives to the water, which can usually find them on the tree lot.
  • Using smaller Christmas lights will produce less heat and reduce the drying effect on the tree.
