They also are seeking help to identify the person who robbed a Cary bank at gunpoint on Thursday morning and to find a car that may be linked to that robbery.
Police are searching for a dark colored, rusty, late 1980's model sub-compact car. It is unclear whether the original color is burgundy or brown.
The motel robbery was similar to recent crimes committed in Morrisville and Durham, although Thursday's bank robbery appears to be unrelated.
In the Nov. 7 robbery at the Courtyard by Marriott, at 2001 Hospitality Court in Cary, a registered guest was robbed of his wallet in his room after a suspect knocked on his door and identified himself and a companion as motel maintenance.
The suspects said they needed to check the phone in the victim's room.
The victim went into the bathroom momentarily. Upon his return, he discoveredthat the men had left, and his wallet had been stolen.
A credit card belonging to the victim was later used at a Phillips 66 station in Durham.
One suspect is described as a black male, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 165-170 pounds.
"We haven't experienced this type of crime recently and are committed toending it," Detective Randy Byrd said. "If occupants of a hotel are unsureabout the identity of someone who is attempting to gain entry into theirroom, they should call the front desk."
In Thursday's crime, the Bank of America on 1001 St. Charles Place was robbed around 11 a.m. There were four employees and one customer in the bank at the time, and no injuries were reported.
According to police, the suspect approached a teller, produced a nickel-plated handgun and demanded money. He received an undisclosed amount of money, exited the bank on foot and left in an unknown direction.
The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, 130 to 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a baseball cap, black shirt and dark pants, with a lue scarf around his face and a white towel wrapped around his head.
Cary Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,500 for information leading to theidentification and apprehension of those responsible for the motel robbery.
