Harrison Leads Baker In Wake Sheriff's Race

is still too close to call.

Challenger Donnie Harrison holds a slim edge over incumbent John Baker. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Harrison had more than 2,000 more votes than Baker.

Harrison is stopping short of declaring absolute victory, but is confident that he has ended the 24-year reign of political powerhouse, Sheriff John Baker.

"It looks like there's going to be a new sheriff in town," Harrison told campaign supporters. "I couldn't have done it by myself," "We had the best grassroots campaign of anybody in this county."

Wake County elections officials will count provisional ballots Wednesday; however, it is unclear how many ballots are outstanding.

Baker believes those ballots will put him over the top.

"The elections board says there is a substantial number of provisional votes out there and I'm confident when those votes are counted John Baker will still be sheriff," he said.
