Wake County Woman Wants To Put Refrigerator Problems On Ice

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Appliances can be expensive so when they break, it can be irritating. Many people pay for extended warranties, but as one woman found out, sometimes those warranties do not make it any easier to get a problem fixed.

A towel is usually a fixture on Mary Burt's floor. She keeps it there to soak up the water from her leaking Admiral-brand refrigerator. She said she bought her refrigerator three years ago, along with an extended warranty from Circuit City.

About a year later, it started leaking. A repairman came out several times and blamed it on the drip pan, but he did not fix the problem, saying it wasn't covered by the warranty.

Another repairman told Burt to raise the front of the refrigerator on blocks, but Burt said it has not helped.

"It's an inconvenience and it's a problem. People's refrigerators shouldn't leak like that," she said.

A few months ago, the ice and water dispenser quit working. A repairman said he needed to order a part, but Burt said nobody has done anything.

"I decided it's time for me to get some help," she said. "All I want is my refrigerator to work."

Burt called Five on Your Side. Five On Your Side called Circuit City which, in turn, contacted GE -- the warranty company. GE immediately sent Burt $100 for her trouble and another repairman. Later that day, GE offered Burt a brand-new refrigerator.

"I appreciate them offering to get me a new one. I really do because they didn't have to do that," she said.

On Monday morning, Burt's new refrigerator was delivered.

"This is it! This is the one I picked out! I hope it does better than the other one," Burt said.

Circuit City officials said both problems were covered under Burt's warranty. Spokeswoman Jennifer Mullen called the problem a "breakdown in communication" because parts that needed to be ordered were not.
