Fire Ants Marching Their Way To Triangle

The fire ants are often found on garden plants, pine straw and other horticultural products. They are easy to detect once you know what to look for.

"If you see several mounds in the yard, become suspicious because there will be a great number in the yard at times," said Logan Williams, of the state Department of Agriculture.

There is no way to kill the ants over a broad area, but you can destroy them one mound at a time. Gil Decker, horticulturist for Capitol Broadcasting Co., has been fighting the ants for about a year-and-a-half with some success.

"If you see a new mound come up, you treat it immediately. You don't let it spread," he said.

Agriculture experts claim treating a mound is not to disturb the mound itself because that can cause the ants to simply spread faster.

Experts say spreading Amdro around the mound will help eliminate the pests. Experts also say not to use gasoline or other fuels to flush out the ants because it does not work and it is against the law.
