Computer Problems Provide Second Chance For Early Voters

Voting equipment at the Cary Senior Citizens Center and the Northwest Police Substation failed to record every vote. The machines were immediately pulled from the sites, and optical scan ballots are being used instead.

Officials said voters whose votes were not recorded are being contacted by the Wake County Board of Elections and will be allowed to vote again, either early or on Election Day. Citizens are being contacted by telephone, by regular mail and by certified mail.

State law requires county Boards of Election to test and evaluate election equipment before it is purchased. Wake County is testing the equipment during the early voting period, but it will not use it for the general election on Nov. 5.
