RALEIGH, N.C. — A wife at the center of a murder-for-hire case is calling herself a victim.

Former Lee County prosecutor Bill Huggins is accused of asking his mistress to kill his wife, Kathy. Last month, Melissa Davis testified Huggins gave her a gun and described scenarios for the killing.

Kathy Huggins claims she is a victim of the system. In a letter to the editor of

newspaper, Kathy wrote, "What happened to the motto so often uttered by all my husband's peers, Innocent until Proven Guilty? I am a victim."

Kathy Huggins claims the case has cost the family their life savings. She also claims the State Bureau of Investigation is not offering her any protection. SBI officials say they cannot comment on the pending case.
