Education chief discusses jobs at Wake Tech

Posted October 25, 2011

— U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan discussed the challenges facing community colleges and the future of education in America during a town hall meeting at Wake Technical Community College on Tuesday.

Duncan's visit was part of a national tour to promote President Barack Obama's $447 billion jobs proposal, which Duncan said would improve the conditions of public schools and help prevent teacher layoffs.

Duncan told a standing-room only crowd that Obama's bill would provide $5 billion for community college improvements nationwide.

North Carolina's share would be about $163 million. Duncan said some of that money could help Wake Tech finish its new campus, making room for more classes for thousands of students on waiting lists.

"This is the kind of place that we want to support. We want to invest. We want to help you grow. We want this country to get back on its feet economically, and to do that, families have to get back on their feet," Duncan said. "Families get back on their feet by having access to great community colleges, like Wake Tech."

Duncan said Obama's jobs bill includes $60 billion for education. Half of the money would go to pay teachers. The measure failed in the U.S. Senate last week under opposition from Republicans and some Democrats.

North Carolina Republicans criticized Duncan's trip, calling it a political mission and a waste of tax dollars.

Obama came to North Carolina to make the pitch for his American Jobs Act last week, the third time he's visited the state since June.

My goodness we invest in education every time we receive a paycheck, it is just the state and federal governments refuse to put the money where it needs to go. Just like Social Security, we are forced to pay into "that fund" but this money WAS NOT set aside for peoples retirements, it was put in the general fund and has been used elsewhere til we are now where they are saying Social Security is going broke and will be broke. Had they set this money aside like they should have done that money could have drawn intrest and there should have and would have been plenty of money for those retiring now andin the future. But thats government in control of our money, mainly the Dems, cause they love to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND.

This is just the beginning of Obama campaigners coming to NC. He carried NC and VA in 2008 and will need to again to be re-elected. He will promise the world and more to get your vote in 2012. Every day, the price will go up-our bargaining power will go up.

I wonder what it would take for him to simply move back to Chicagoland and be quiet!! Priceless!!!!! Never happen-power is too corrupting.

"Education chief to discuss jobs at Wake Tech" --headline

Misplaced modifier, WRAL? How about, "Education chief at Wake Tech to discuss jobs"?

Right, so here is pretty much how it will go...he will stage minorities including illegals around him for some good photo and video ops...then spout on about how spending money in the government on more government creates meaningful jobs when the government produces nothing...

When you people stop paying companies to go out of the country to employ low wage workers to get rid of the middle class group here and bring the jobs back and boost the economy then it will get better.
Oh yeah also in jan when the troops get back and we stop paying billions every year on a lousy family battle that bush started just because his daddy couldn't get sadaam then it will start to get better.

I wonder what the desired outcome of this trip really is for the WH??? Is it campaigning, is it selling the rediculous "jobs" bill? Why is he coming?? Why is he spending tax payerdollars to make this speech.

This is the kind of critical thinking that must take place in order to get our fiscal house in order. STARTING NOW!!

That is what private business does for most trips. Will the benefits exceed the costs??? Justify the expense!!If the answer is no, the trip is cancelled. If the purpose is votes, bill the campaign-not the taxpayers for the trip(like that will happen!!)!!!

There is the problem-the policy vs. campaign is very un-clear to this WH!! Matter of fact, BHO has never stopped campaigning since he arrived at the WH!!

"Oh, you mean by increased demand, driven by jobs, which the private sector isn't making, despite the lowest tax burden in decades?"

Huh? Why do you think businesses aren't hiring? Really, I'm curious how you arrive at it being a tax issue only.

Save your breath and the trip until Obama's voted out of office.
