Police were called to the Sonic drive-in restaurant on Atlantic Avenue just after 10 p.m. Witnesses told police two or three black men attempted to rob the restaurant.
"At this point, the information we have would tend to indicate that it's probably a robbery where something went wrong," said Lt. Chris Morgan of the Raleigh Police Department.
Donald Kersey, 21, a cook at the restaurant, was shot. He died Monday at WakeMed.
Police said the robbery may be tied to a carjacking that took place at the American Pride car wash on New Bern Avenue about 45 minutes earlier.
"A vehicle was taken at gunpoint. There are some commonalities in the description of the perpetrators in that case as well as this case," Morgan said.
The victim of the carjacking, who does not want to be identified, said he was waxing his car Sunday night when two men came from the rear of the car with a gun. They told the victim "We don't want an emergency, all we want is the car." The victim said he put his hands up and walked away.
Raleigh police said the suspects should be considered are armed and dangerous; however, they have not confirmed whether the car used in the robbery was the car that was stolen from the car wash.
Raleigh police are looking for a green 1992 BMW 325i. The car has North Carolina license plate PXW-8469.
