CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The oldest daughter of John and Elizabeth Edwards married her longtime boyfriend at the University Methodist Church in Chapel Hill Saturday with her father at her side.

"It's just great," said family friend Glenn Bergenfield. "(It) couldn't be a nicer, better day for the Edwards family."

After the wedding, Cate Edwards and new husband Trevor Upham walked arm-in-arm out of the church, while John Edwards left through the back with a police escort.

Bergenfield said the former North Carolina Senator was proud and happy to walk his daughter down the aisle.

"John is strong. He's got some hard times ahead, but today is a wonderful day and John feels delighted that Trevor is going to be Cate's husband," Bergenfield said.

John Edwards faces felony charges related to more than $1 million in undisclosed payments from political supporters that prosecutors say were used to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter, who became pregnant with his child, during his 2008 presidential run.

The wedding comes 10 months after Elizabeth Edwards passed away from breast cancer.

"The Edwards family, as the whole nation knows, has had its difficult times. This isn't one of them," Bergenfield said. "This is just a great day."
