Tuesday afternoon, university administrators announced that overnight hours and services will resume at D.H. Hill effective Oct. 16. Weeknight hours at the library will be extended until 2 a.m., beginning Sunday, Sept. 22.
"Encouraged by the joint conference committee budget report, we have decided to restore services because of a strong belief that the NCSU Libraries are a central and vital resource for our students and faculty," Provost Stuart Cooper said. "We are committed to meeting the fiscal challenges we must address as state legislators refine the state's budget, but likewise, we are resolute that our students must not be deprived of access to the library resources."
Monday evening, students met with lawmakers and school administrators.The meeting gave both sides a chance to discuss challenges they are facing in a tough budget year.
The meeting came after students held a read-in at D.H. Hill library last week to protest budget cuts that affected library hours. The library, which used to be open 24 hours, currently closes at midnight.
"We care about the university, that's the end-all and be-all. We're not fighting anybody but the people who are taking the money from us and that's the General Assembly. We want to make sure they understand our concerns," a student said.
Students are keeping up the pressure on lawmakers with a march on the legislature Tuesday.
Hours and services at the library had been trimmed back as part of campus-wide reductions, as a result of anticipated cuts to the university caused by the state budget shortfall.
