— Fayetteville police are searching for a man after he assaulted a female officer as she tried to arrest him early Thursday morning.

Police say officer Mary McCafferty was punched in the face several times after she responded to a report of a vehicle break-in near the College Lakes neighborhood on Southport Road around 3:45 a.m.

McCafferty stopped near the intersection of Ridgeway Drive and Ramsey Street to talk with a man who matched the description of the break-in suspect, authorities said. After discovering evidence linking the man to the incident, McCafferty began taking the man into custody.

She placed hand-cuffs onto one of the man's wrists before the man began to fight back, punching McCafferty repeatedly, police said.

The man fled the scene after the assault. McCafferty was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital for minor injuries.

Police say the black man fled the scene on a bicycle following the assault. He is about 6-feet tall and 215 pounds.

He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, denim jeans, black shoes and a black puffy jacket. He had the hand-cuffs on his right wrist.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fayetteville Police Department or 911.

Why didn't she wait for some male officers to come back her up? Same way in every department. The women are there to fulfill the EOE requirements. Just watch cops. I watched THREE women cops get dragged around the parking lot like ragdolls until a few male officers came to actually do the police work.

lineofduty, what did your relative do or try to do, immediately before she hit him with the stick?

Police cannot win for loosing. They catch a bad guy and are accused of using unnecessry force. They tase a man who obivously was mentally imbalanced and since they didn't have him medically evaluated before he began fighting them, they probably never new he had some kind of unlying medical condition and quite sadly he passed. TAKE AWAY THE TASERS. One cop has too shoot a man, probably drunk or something and now another office is off the street and behind a desk until SBI finishes grilling and abusing him. Now another officer gets the daylights beat out of her but SHE DIDN'T SHOOT THE WONDERFUL GENTLEMAN but now a second officer is off the street while she recovers. Oh by the way, they got their Tasers back today. A day late and two cops short.

This has happened many times to male officers. Also, I have seen many male officers that are much smaller than the person they are arresting.

Maybe she needs to get a desk job. May she be OK in time.

"thepeopleschamp - even today the FBI refuses to investigate. my cousin was a two time olympic champion. state champ wrestler, and was due to represent the USA in the Olympics. He was a church going straight A individual. happened in Boulder Colorado in 1985 ... you will find no record of it ever happening. Once they learned it could be the police ... everything reporting his death STOPPED." lineOfDuty

So the FBI, the police in Colorado, police in Mexico, Border Patrol, records clerks, and the media all joined hands in a murder cover up because they didn't like college students? And there is no record of it? How convenient. I'll check the tv listing to see when that comes on Lifetime again.

thepeopleschamp - it was my cousin. he was a great person. The cops turned out to be college student haters. all of them quit the force and left the state. No one was charged. The vehicles that took my cousin to his death were found buried in the senoria desert in mexico and disappeared from town records.

SHE SHOULD HAVE PULLED HER GUN AND SHOT HIM, IF SHE COULD, AFTER THE 1ST PUNCH. NO REASON FOR HIM TO BE ABLE TO GET AWAY ON A BIKE AND NOT BE SHOT UNLESS HE KNOCKED HER OUT!!

There are some really unintelligent comments on here. I know lots of very successful women out there in law enforcement who have done the job very well & been in many, many fights and survived without injury & fought men much larger and heavier than themselves. Known male officers to do the same with perps begger than them. Have also seen a very small perp whip a large officer, especially those who are over confident because of their size.

I was 5' 3 & weighed up to 80-125 less than the guys I arrested & never failed to negotiate a fight & succeed without having to shoot anyone in over 23 years. Worked the bar district in Jax for many years been in many, many fights.

You use your brain, not brawn always. You fight when you have to but you fight smarter. You learn the techniques to survive. However, many officers have lost one that fled while attempting to cuff them. It goes with the territory on occassion. No one is perfect. Don't judge unless you can walk the walk!!!
