A group of counselors and kids from a Cary YMCA are working on a giant flag. The flag is dotted with the handprints of hundreds of kids, signifying the unity theme of the flag. The idea was born out of the Sept. 11 attack.
Jason Cunningham, who helped to come up with the concept, said it is a proud moment for him.
"I figured what better way to represent the children is by actually putting their handprints on there, almost like they're pledging to the flag, and they're pledging that we are a nation," he said. "We are united and the future is in our hands."
Another 100 more kids will be putting their handprints on the flag before it is complete. The YMCA group is leaving Friday to deliver the flag to one of the fire-fighting companies in New York.
