Wake Schools, Parents May Face Off In Court

Some parents whose children have Swift Creek and Dillard Drive Elementary as their base schools say they are angry. Cary Mayor Glen Lang said the county school system told those parents their kids must attend those schools, even though other parents can choose where to send their children.

Lang said the town may help the parents both politically and financially if they decide to take the issue to court.

"I don't think that what we are looking at doing is trying not to support the public school system," he said. "I think we are trying to make the public school system stronger and I think the school board's policy is not very equitable and not very just.

Associate Wake Superintendent Walt Sherlin said the school system has a mandate to keep all of its schools healthy and that is why they are doing it. Sherlin said students at both schools scored very well on their end-of-grade tests. He said there is some concern that those scores may drop due to students leaving those schools.
