Cary, DOT Officials Team Up To Solve Traffic Problems

Maps are being used to put together the Southeast Gateway Area Plan 2002. People who live in Cary will be asked for their input.

"What they feel the best uses might be. We're asking them to think about the balances of the pros and cons of allowing one use over another use, and what that means to the town and its future," planner Gordon Sutherland said.

The 2002 plan is an update to the plan drafted in 1998 -- a plan that brought new roads like the Dillard Drive extension and realigned roads like Walnut Street.

Cary and DOT officials are also looking to ease traffic trouble near the Crossroads area.

The DOT plan would eliminate some ramps to U.S. Highway 1/64 and add new ramps to the south of the interchange. A longer range consultant plan would do more and cost much more.

"Absolutely, we need to improve that area particularly around the holidays, trying to stop in Cary Crossroads to just get in there to find a parking spot is a nightmare," motorist Peg Jones said.
