HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A judge decided Tuesday that an Orange County man will face the death penalty for a triple murder.
Alan Gates is charged with killing his daughter, her friend and her friend's 2-year-old son earlier this month.
District Attorney Carl Fox described in court Wednesday what happened when deputies and Gates' estranged wife showed up at her rural home July 1.
"When she went in the room, she screamed, 'He killed them. He killed them,'" Fox said.
Gates confessed to deputies shortly after he was arrested.
Security was tight in the courtroom. Several armed officers and the sheriff himself were present to make sure nothing went wrong.
Since his arrest, Gates has been in Raleigh's Central Prison.
