RALEIGH, N.C. — A "get tough" policy on illegal guns has more criminals doing hard time in federal prison.
In the last 18 months, Operation Safe Neighborhoods has taken 864 guns off North Carolina streets. It has also turned 100 gun users into defendants.
The program is a joint effort by federal, state and local law enforcement officials to track where illegal guns are used and trace them to their source.
The program also makes the penalties tougher for convicted felons.
