Deena Revels said the first month after her daughter, Rebekah, won Miss North Carolina was a dream, but that dream shattered this week. Revels' former fiance, now a police officer in the mountains, passed along negative information about her to the Miss America Organization.
In her resignation letter, Revels said,
"It is not my desire that my personal life or the physically and emotionally abusive relationship of which I was once a part should be used to bring any degree of reproach upon a program that I truly admire."
Revels said her daughter and the family are devastated with the resignation and accuses the former fiance of being vindictive, bringing up things from years ago. She said the last few days have been like a funeral with flowers, cards and well-wishes coming to their home from across the state.
Revels' hometown of St. Pauls in Robeson County is standing by her. From the Mayor to business owners, everyone is posting signs.
"She is our queen and remains our queen. We are very proud of Rebekah and her accomplishments. She's still the same young lady that sang her way into the hearts of the judges and she'll always be in our hearts," said Linda West, board member of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Miss America organization has said the resignation was the best thing for all involved. The organization stated that information about their character criteria is not for the public. The Revels family said they may talk publicly soon and are looking into any action they can take against the former fiance.
